02/11/2011	JRF Barnstaple	Trimstone Manor is a lovely place to spend time. 40 acres of glorious grounds to cocoon us against the mad world outside. A really great place for a get away, but also close to lots of attractions in Devon. We loved it. Took the family and grandparents to Tyme restaurant for Sunday lunch, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The food and wines are excellent. For me you can't beat Beef and Yorkshire pudding but others also enjoyed the most delicious pate ever following by fresh salmon. The staff are very attentive, they gave excellent service and created a very friendly atmosphere to ensure we enjoyed ourselves. The children loved seeing the pets after lunch and we had a lovely afternoon.

An enterprise such as this deserves to be encouraged and supported; indeed in the tourist-dependent area in which it is located I would imagine it is vital to urge as many people as possible to visit, eat and stay at the hotel, thus bringing much needed revenue into the local economy. All they want to achieve is future and sustainable security for the business and its employees and a business which is dedicated to providing a quality service for the local and wider communities. I have no interest in the business other than as an occasional and very satisfied customer.

In that review, I made a couple of suggestions – a higher chair in the bar, and bigger red wine glasses. I was surprised and delighted to see that both of these had been addressed. There was a suitable chair – it looked as though it had been brought in specially, so, if you have the same problem as I do, it is probably worth mentioning it. The glasses were also bigger. In fact, the menu was also slightly bigger than previously, as was, I think, the wine list. Service was good. The meal was well paced, with the courses brought neither too quickly nor too slowly. One of my pet hates is a restaurant where you have barely finished one course before the next is brought. This was not the case here. The meal, 3 courses, took a bit under 2 hours, from arrival to departure, which, for 2 people, is about right. My wife’s starter was a couple of lamb cutlets, served with a small mound of mashed potato and some gravy. Very unusual for a starter, but a sign that the chef is not hidebound by convention. Given that only bones remained, I think my wife must have enjoyed it. I had an excellent game terrine – I hope that appears more regularly on the menu as it was very more-ish! For my main, I had a steak, medium rare and cooked perfectly. As an aside, 2 of my daughters had visited a London restaurant, specialising in barbeque cooking and part-owned by a well known TV chef, the day before. One of them ordered a rare steak and had it served up so well done it was like leather. That cost her £35 (London prices!). My steak here cost far less than that and was infinitely better. My wife had confit duck legs. There were two of them. They were a bit on the small side, which is probably why there were two – one leg is normally enough. Again, I assume they were good, as only bones remained. I normally have drunk the S African Pinotage here, but, for the last visit, I thought I would have a change and had a bottle of the Aussie Shiraz – the price is about the same as the Pinotage, about £23. To my surprise, it was the 2005 vintage. It was delicious, mature, elegant and powerful. Wines of that maturity are sadly rare on restaurant wine lists and, when available, cost several times more. Sorry if I sound like an advert for the restaurant – I assure you I have no relationship, except as a customer. As I said in my last review, it is worth a detour, and, as the evenings become brighter, the view from the restaurant becomes even better. Much the same can be said of the food."

The roast meat was local and very tender and tasty. The trimmings were plentiful and well prepared (for a change the vegetables were crisp not mush as carveries often serve). We had the cheese board which was a lovely selection of local cheeses. The children had a variety of desserts which they appeared to enjoy since there was scant left on the plate. The food is prepared with an imaginative twist that make it stand out as a distinctive meal - I still remember clearly my first taste of lavender flavoured short bread! Service has polite and timely - we didn't have to wait for any aspect of the meal. A thoroughly enjoyable meal of solid Devonian fare in a lovely rural setting. I would definitely recommend this establishment to others.

It's only a ten minute drive from the beach and cafes/pubs in Woolacombe, so a good location. The pool and Jacuzzi are a nice touch. Our room was pretty (old beams etc), clean and functional. Dinner was lovely.”

These were well appointed with good quality kitchen equipment and great showers (and no problems with hot water!). Location is great - very close to lots of good sand beaches and next to a wonderful child friendly bicycle route (the Tarka Trail). The weather wasn’t great during our stay but we were rescued from 'death by children' by a wonderful large indoor pool that was kept deliciously warm. Hope to come back when the sun is shining.”

22/06/2010	Hertsmum	Enjoyed 2 very nice, good value meals at Tyme during our stay at one of the cottages belonging to the hotel. Not a wide-ranging menu (difficult if you're changing every evening and quite a small concern), but still enough choice to find acceptance with 2 adults, 2 teens and a non-too-adventurous grandma! Good, friendly service. Altogether an experience we would look to repeat.
