Trimstone News – January 2022

Dear Guest

I hope that you have all had a good Christmas and New Year Break, conditions allowing of course.  I hope too that you are keeping safe.

We enjoyed a lovely House Party at Trimstone and Children of all ages staying over for several days and enjoying a wonderful time with all the decorations, Christmas Grotto and all.  The Staff had done a wonderful job in decorating everything.

Ilfracombe and North Devon

I thought you’d enjoy this delightful promotional video of Ilfracombe and some of beautiful North Devon.  Whether it’s a ‘view of the sea from every tee’ at Ilfracombe Golf Course or Alice in Wonderland or Dance events at the old Pavilion, the Zoo, or entrance to the tunnels Beaches at 6d and 3d (2.5p and a penny in today’s money), surfing at Woolacombe on the Malibu Board and seeing the Coast with its highest sea cliffs in the Country as the Paddle steamer plies its way to Lundy (and Clovelly).  And yes… the video is almost as old as me (with no vehicles having a prefix letter)!  Anyway, that’s half an hour of very enjoyable reminiscence! https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-ilfracombe-1960-online   Aaah – this can take us all back!  Anyone recognise anyone’s relatives?! And thank you to John Fowler Holidays for sponsoring its production all those years ago – a man truly ahead of his time.

Lorna Doone and Exmoor are mentioned too – reminding me of Highwayman Tom Faggus and the legend that he escaped his pursuers by riding his horse off Barnstaple Bridge into the river below.  Here is a lovely article of some of the vagabonds from Devon! https://www.helpfulholidays.co.uk/blog/highwayman-hauntings-of-devon/

Pantomime

Yes, it is time for Pantomime at Croyde Village Hall again!  All the necessary precautions are being taken but do come and support the Team which has been working strenuously and in very challenging conditions to present ‘Aladdin’.  And yes, there will be some characters you will recognise within….  You can even buy the ludicrously cheap tickets online now as well so come on and enjoy a grand time-out but don’t delay as tickets are selling fast! https://www.croydeplayers.co.uk/

I was reminded that January is named after the Roman two-faced god, Janus.  Janus could look back on the year gone and look forward to the year to come and we do that too.  We look forward to seeing friends and visitors alike at Trimstone and helping them have a wonderful break in beautiful North Devon or a Cream Tea on our delightful lawns and gardens.  Remember too, direct booking via our website can be considerably cheaper than going through an online agency or cottage company too (up to 23% dependent upon the length of your stay)!
